In short — sleep therapy at American Oxygen

CPAP, APAP or BiPAP — how to choose, and where to buy

  • What it is → Sleep therapy treats sleep apnea by delivering gentle positive airway pressure through a machine, tube and mask to keep your airway open while you sleep. American Oxygen carries genuine ResMed, Philips Respironics, React Health and more.
  • CPAP vs APAP vs BiPAP → CPAP delivers one fixed pressure all night. APAP (auto CPAP) adjusts the pressure automatically within a range. BiPAP delivers two separate pressures — one to breathe in, a lower one to breathe out — for higher-pressure needs or people who can't tolerate CPAP.
  • How to choose → start with your prescription (fixed, auto, or bilevel, and the pressure), then pick a mask type — full-face, nasal, or nasal pillow — plus comfort features like ramp and a heated humidifier.
  • Where to get it → American Oxygen sells and repairs CPAP and BiPAP equipment — new, Open Box, and Certified Pre-Owned — with free U.S. shipping and a Miami showroom.

CPAP and BiPAP machines are prescription devices. American Oxygen is a retail supplier, not a medical provider — talk to your doctor or sleep specialist about your therapy. Certified Pre-Owned and Open Box units are inspected and tested; warranty by American Oxygen. Not sure which fits? Call (786) 755-8063.

The main decision

CPAP vs. APAP vs. BiPAP

Your prescription points to one of these three. CPAP keeps it simple, APAP adjusts for you, BiPAP handles higher pressures and bilevel needs. Here's how they compare.

How to choose

Five things to match before you buy

Start with your prescription, then fit the machine and mask to how you sleep. When in doubt, call us or ask your provider.

  • Machine type — CPAP, APAP or BiPAP. Your prescription tells you which category you need.
  • Pressure setting — the machine has to cover your prescribed pressure or auto range.
  • Mask type & fit — full-face, nasal, or nasal pillow, matched to how you breathe and sleep.
  • Comfort features — ramp, heated humidifier and a heated tube make therapy easier to stick with.
  • Travel & noise — a compact, quiet machine matters if you fly or share a bedroom.

FAQ

Sleep therapy — frequently asked questions

What's the difference between CPAP and BiPAP?
A CPAP machine delivers a single, steady pressure all night to keep your airway open (an APAP is a CPAP that auto-adjusts within a range). A BiPAP delivers two separate pressures — a higher one when you breathe in and a lower one when you breathe out — which helps with higher-pressure prescriptions or when it's hard to exhale against steady CPAP pressure. Your prescription indicates which you need.
Do I need a prescription to buy a CPAP or BiPAP machine?
Yes. CPAP and BiPAP machines are prescription devices. American Oxygen is a retail supplier, not a medical provider — talk to your doctor or sleep specialist about your therapy, and our team can help you match the right machine and mask to your prescription.
What's the difference between CPAP and APAP?
A standard CPAP holds one fixed pressure that your provider sets. An APAP (auto CPAP) adjusts the pressure automatically within a prescribed range as your needs change through the night — many people find it more comfortable. Both treat sleep apnea; your prescription tells you which is right for you.
Do you sell new or Certified Pre-Owned CPAP machines?
Both. We carry new machines, Open Box units, and Certified Pre-Owned machines. Every Certified Pre-Owned and Open Box unit is inspected and tested by our team, with its condition explained clearly — and backed by warranty by American Oxygen. New machines carry the manufacturer's warranty.
Which mask type should I choose — full-face, nasal, or nasal pillow?
It depends on how you breathe and sleep. Full-face masks suit mouth-breathers and higher pressures; nasal masks are a versatile middle ground; nasal pillow masks are the most minimal and great if you feel closed in or wear glasses in bed. Fit matters more than type — our team can help you pick, and we stock replacement cushions for each.
Do CPAP machines come with a humidifier?
Most of the machines we sell include an integrated heated humidifier, and many of our Certified Pre-Owned bundles ship with the humidifier and tubing. Check each product page for exactly what's included, or call us and we'll confirm before you buy.
Can I travel or fly with my CPAP?
Yes — CPAP machines are allowed on planes and don't count as carry-on luggage. If you travel often, a compact travel CPAP or an AirMini setup is much easier to pack. See our guide to the best travel CPAPs, or call (786) 755-8063 and we'll help you choose.
How do I know if I need a CPAP or a BiPAP?
Your sleep study and prescription decide. In general, a CPAP (or auto-adjusting APAP) is prescribed for standard obstructive sleep apnea, while a BiPAP is used when you need higher pressures, two separate pressures, or you find it hard to breathe out against steady CPAP pressure. Not sure which your prescription calls for? Call (786) 755-8063 and we'll help you match it.
Can I use my current mask with a new machine?
Usually yes. CPAP and BiPAP masks connect through a standard 22 mm tube, so most masks work across brands and machines — just check the connection and your comfort. If you're switching machines, our team can confirm your mask fits before you buy.
How often should I replace my CPAP supplies?
As a general guide: mask cushions about once a month, the full mask every 3–6 months, disposable filters every 2–4 weeks, and tubing every 3 months — replacing them keeps therapy clean and effective. We stock genuine cushions, filters, tubing and headgear so you can restock easily.
Do you repair CPAP and BiPAP machines, and can you help me in Spanish?
Yes on both. Our in-house technicians repair CPAP and BiPAP machines, and if a repair would cost more than a replacement we'll offer fair trade-in credit toward a Certified Pre-Owned unit — start at our Repair Center. Our team supports customers in English and Spanish, and you're welcome to visit our showroom in Doral, Miami to see equipment in person.
