5 LPM vs. 10 LPM — and stationary vs. portable
How many liters do you need?
Your prescription answers this. Most home patients are prescribed somewhere between 1 and 5 LPM, which is exactly what a 5-liter unit is built for. A 10-liter unit exists for prescriptions above 5 LPM — it's bigger, heavier and costs more, so there's no reason to buy one you don't need.

Power, noise and what to do if the lights go out
A home concentrator is a plug-in appliance — plan for that.
It makes oxygen out of room air, so there are no tanks to refill and nothing to deliver. But it does need electricity, and it does make some noise. Here's what that actually looks like:
- Power: a 5-liter unit draws about 350 W — similar to a desktop computer
- Most efficient: the Inogen At Home, at about 100 W on setting 2

Do I need a prescription to buy a home oxygen concentrator?
Yes. In the U.S., home oxygen requires a valid prescription. Accessories — cannulas, filters, tubing, humidifier bottles — do not. If you already have your Rx, we'll help you order the right unit.
What's the difference between a 5 LPM and a 10 LPM concentrator?
A 5-liter unit delivers up to 5 liters per minute of continuous flow and covers the large majority of home prescriptions. A 10-liter unit goes up to 10 LPM and is prescribed when high flow is required. Your prescription tells you how many liters per minute you need.
Do I need insurance to buy one?
No. We're a cash-pay retailer — you can buy any unit outright with no insurance, and pay over time with Affirm at checkout.
How loud is a home concentrator?

Yes. These units are built to run continuously, day and night. Always use the liter setting your prescription specifies.
Is a Certified Pre-Owned unit safe to buy?
Yes. Every Certified Pre-Owned unit is inspected, reconditioned and function-tested before it ships, and it carries a 1-year warranty by American Oxygen. It's the same therapy for meaningfully less.
What maintenance does it need?
Not much: clean or replace the cabinet filter regularly, and replace the columns (sieve beds) on the manufacturer's schedule. We stock the filters, columns and maintenance kits for the brands we carry.
Can I travel with it or take it on a plane?
No. Stationary concentrators are for home use. To travel you need a portable oxygen concentrator with batteries — airlines allow those onboard as carry-on medical devices. See our portable oxygen concentrator page.
Do they work at altitude?
Some models specify a maximum operating altitude. The React Phoenix 5L and the Philips EverFlo are rated to 7,500 ft (2,286 m). If you live at altitude, confirm on that model's product page or call us before buying.
What happens if the power goes out?
A concentrator needs power to run, so it's worth agreeing on a backup plan with your physician or provider. Many patients keep a battery-powered portable concentrator as backup. Call us and we'll help you put that plan together.
Can I rent instead of buying?
Yes — in Miami-Dade we rent both home and portable concentrators. If you need oxygen for a few weeks — a visit, a recovery — renting is usually the better deal. See our rentals page or call us.
